Black Sable is a recessively inherited colour. Both parents must carry the gene in order to produce it. Pups are born nearly black at birth. Their colour will fade as they grow - but return as they mature. The undercoat is lighter and can be grey, fawn or red to Mahogany. It can take up to 3 years for a dog to regrow the full dark coat they were born with. I have had many requests for this colour. I am happy to keep a waiting list for those who would like a black sable coloured pup. Pups can have associated markings such as the black points.socks or have red points like the Doberman. My bloodline carriers both colours of point markings. The following dogs in my breeding program are known to carry, and produce, Black Sable. Carriers of a trait (where you cannot see that trait is referred to as genotype. Phenotype is when you can see that particular trait exhibited).

Known carriers (genotype) for Black Sable:
Carry the trait, but they themselves do not show it.
Falcon, Shirley, Quill, Blade, Jig, Target, Tuzo, Valour, Spartacus, Fox and Jig.

Suspected carriers (genotype) for Black Sable:
Raven, Maximus, Sky, Topaz, Beau and Adelaar.

Phenotype Black Sables:
Exhibite the trait and can pass it if bred to a carrier or phenotype Black Sable:
Henna, Ebony, Allure and Mac

Carrier to Carrier breedings typically produce 1-3 pups depending on the size of the litter. Phenotype to carrier often produces 25%-50% and Phenotype to Phenotype should produce around 80% Black Sable. We expect to have many upcoming litters that will produce this colour, though it is not our primary colour goal when selecting mates.
